  Kathrin W Scott

I have been weaving and dyeing since 1975. My husband, David W.Scott (scottwoodworking.com), is a woodworker/designer who makes furniture and wooden accessories. We live in the mountains of NC which is a very supportive community for artists and other self-employed people. We sell through galleries, directly to the customer through commissions and through fine quality Art and Craft Shows.

Our sons, Eli and Evan, grew up helping in our studios and traveling with us from Rhode Island to Florida as we sold our work at shows. They never lived in a traditional family setting in which the parents got in the car and drove to work each morning and home again in the afternoon. At our house each activity is related to every other activity - whether it is time in the garden, time in the studio, time on the road to shows, time to read books before bed. This is one of the aspects of my work that I have cherished the most. Life is not divided into “work hours” and “not work hours”. It is all a flow of the life we live. Our sons are two of the most creative people I know. In fact, Evan built this web site!

Color and the flow of color are the focus of my handwoven work. My clothesline is regularly draped with long and colorful yarns drying in the sun. I weave by hand on large wooden floor looms using cotton and other cellulose fibers in my Blankets and Bags. Sturdy and simple weave structures are the basis for the functional items I make.

When I am not dyeing or weaving, I am likely to be found teaching workshops on dyeing and weaving or, more recently, Contra Dancing. What great exercise and social interaction! We live in a wonderful place for this style of dancing and we are taking full advantage of it.

I am a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild, Piedmont Craftsmen and Carolina Designer Craftsmen. Additionally, I teach weaving at the John C. Campbell Folk Scool.
