Undyed 1,200 yard Ring Spun Cotton Skeins

$18.00

Pre-wound, un-dyed skeins in natural Ring Spun Cotton, 1,200 yards each.

These skeins can be worked with in its natural color. They can also be dyed by the purchaser. The yarn is compact, strong and absorbent. It dyes deeply and richly. Because they are cellulose materials, I use MX Fiber Reactive “cold water” dyes which are color-fast, considered ecologically sensitive and simple to use.

Yarn To Be Dyed Must Be Scoured (see scouring info in longer description below.)

Shipping will be added at check out. An additional 5% of product price will be added to orders sent to countries other than the USA. (Minimum of $5) This can be avoided if you have an address in the US to which your warps can be shipped.

Yarn To Be Dyed Must Be Scoured

Scouring is essential to allow cotton yarn to accept dye, but it does not have to be complicated. When I wind the warps, I secure them by tying off the cross plus choke ties at the beginning and the end of the warps. When you unchain the warps to scour, dye or use however you choose to use it, please be sure to add as many security ties as you might need to be sure you don’t tangle it during dyeing, rinsing, drying or setting up your loom. Make sure the security ties are loose enough to scour the yarn under the ties and to allow the dye to penetrate under the ties.

Scouring:

To scour yarn or fabric – use HOT water (140*F), A dash of Dawn dish soap (or Synthrapol if you have it). Do not use anything with bleach or brighteners. Without tangling, manipulate and squeeze the yarn to work the hot soapy water into all the fibers and under the security ties. When the yarn is completely saturated and falls to the bottom of bucket or sink it is done. If an area of your yarn is resisting the hot soapy water, you can add some Arm and Hammer Washing Soda to increase the scouring power. Rinse well. All this can be done in a washing machine using the fill and spin cycles, but do NOT agitate! After the warp is fully saturated and scoured, be sure to rinse excess soap before dyeing.

If you are bringing this yarn to a dye class of mine, the cottons will need to be damp for the dye process. You can bring it damp or dry. If it comes dry, we can dampen it at the workshop.

(Any Tencel, Bamboo or rayon purchased from me does not need to be scoured. It may be that Tencel, Bamboo or rayon you get from other sources don’t need to be scoured either, but not knowing more about them I can’t say that for sure.)
